It was Alabama coach Nick Saban’s decision to put true freshman Tua Tagovailoa on the field in the College Football Playoff National Championship last week, but it was offensive coordinator Brian Daboll’s play call that led to Tagovailoa’s game-winning touchdown in overtime.

Weighed down by an offense that scored only three touchdowns in seven games against playoff teams this season, the Buffalo Bills are hoping to steal some of the Crimson Tide’s magic. Coach Sean McDermott plucked Daboll away from Alabama on Sunday to become Buffalo’s fifth offensive coordinator in five seasons.

Now the Bills must do what Saban did by signing Tagovailoa, who was ESPN’s top-rated recruit at his position: find a quarterback.

That would be a novel development for Daboll, whose quarterbacks in his three previous stints as an NFL offensive coordinator have been Brady Quinn, Derek Anderson, Colt McCoy, Jake Delhomme, Seneca Wallace, Matt Moore, Chad Henne and Matt Cassel.

Over that span, Daboll’s offenses finished 32nd (Cleveland Browns in 2009), 29th (Browns in 2010), 22nd (Miami Dolphins in 2011) and 24th (Kansas City Chiefs in 2012) in total yards.

Daboll has not worked miracles with any of the quarterbacks he has been given in his NFL career, but the Bills should not ask Daboll to try to turn an average starter such as Tyrod Taylor into something greater.

Buffalo is better off investing the resources in finding the next star at quarterback and seeing if Daboll can help steer the ship. That is what Daboll successfully did in a brief glimpse on a national stage when Tagovailoa replaced Jalen Hurts in the second half of the national championship.

The Bills fired Rick Dennison as offensive coordinator last week after one season on the job. Dennison had a background in coaching offensive lines and had been given full playcalling duties for the first time this past season.

Dennison seemed to overthink short-yardage and red-zone situations and struggled to get Taylor to push the ball downfield, frustrating fans by dialing up plays that ultimately resulted in check-down passes to fullback Patrick DiMarco or backup running back Mike Tolbert.

It is only one playcall, but Daboll showed a more aggressive streak when he had Alabama’s receivers run “Seattle” — four vertical routes — on second-and-26 in overtime. Tagovailoa had just taken a first-down sack and Daboll could have played it more conservatively to try to match Georgia’s field goal on the previous possession. But the gamble to go for the end zone paid off, with Daboll collecting the sixth championship ring of his career.

The Bills could benefit from Daboll’s experience at Alabama, as well as his five Super Bowl titles as an assistant coach for the New England Patriots. But in order for Daboll to prove himself as an effective NFL offensive coordinator in his fourth try, he will need a quarterback.

Brett Hundley and the Packers

The Bavarian Bierhaus in suburban Milwaukee has a pretty strong NFL game-day special: No one pays for beer until the Packers score.

You know the drill! #GoPackGo

Posted by The Bavarian Bierhaus on Sunday, November 19, 2017

With Aaron Rodgers leading the Packers’ offense for most of the season, that hasn’t meant all that much free beer. Over Green Bay’s first nine games, the Packers scored in the first quarter six times. The worst hit for the Bierhaus came in Week 1, when Green Bay didn’t score until about five minutes had elapsed in the third quarter against the Seahawks.

The promotion remained viable even after Rodgers went down with a broken collarbone in Week 6. The Packers scored just two minutes into their first game with Brett Hundley as their starter in Week 7 and — after going nearly an entire half without scoring in Week 8 — needed only 7:40 of game time to score in Week 9.

But then Sunday’s game against the Ravens happened, and the free beer never stopped flowing. Final score: Ravens 23, Packers 0, Green Bay’s first shutout loss at home in exactly 11 years, when Brett Favre got knocked out of the game and the Patriots won, 35-0. It was just the third time the Packers have been shut out overall since 1992.

Bierhaus GM Scott Bell told WTMJ radio that the restaurant served up between 275 and 300 servings of free beer to the 200 people who were taking in the game. He added that he has no plans to halt the promotion after the Packers’ offensive power outage.

“Wisconsinites and Packers fans are at least somewhat responsible,” Bell said.

The Steelers are up next for the Packers. Pittsburgh is allowing only 16.5 points per game to rank second in the NFL but also has allowed first-quarter points in six of its 10 games and hasn’t shut out an opponent since 2011.

Cheap Minnesota Vikings Jersey From China For Sale

Minnesota Vikings quarterback Sam Bradford underwent an arthroscopic procedure Tuesday in which Dr. James Andrews “cleaned up” his left knee but found no major damage, according to team sources.

Bradford was returning to Minnesota on Tuesday night and will await the team’s decision on whether the club will place him on injured reserve when it activates Teddy Bridgewater to the 53-man roster on Wednesday.

Andrews removed several loose particles from Bradford’s knee, cleaned up some ragged cartilage and smoothed out a bone spur, sources said. Andrews has communicated to the club that he is hopeful the procedure will ease the pain that Bradford has been experiencing but offered no assurances on the ultimate outcome, per one source.

Bradford’s knee joint and structure has been previously deemed stable by team orthopedic doctors, as well as Andrews, who repaired the quarterback’s two prior ACL tears in 2013 and 2014.

The Vikings got Bradford in a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles, in which Minnesota gave up a first- and fourth-round pick.

Bradford, acquired after Bridgewater dislocated his knee, played a relatively injury-free season in 2016 despite the team’s pass protection problems.

Bradford then opened the 2017 season in spectacular fashion on Monday Night Football, throwing for 346 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Vikings to a 29-19 victory over the New Orleans Saints. However, he woke up the following day experiencing significant pain and swelling in his left knee. He has played in only one game since, against the Bears on Oct. 9, from which he had to be removed because of the pain.
