Jonathan Allen

The Washington Redskins won’t bring back their first-round draft pick, Alabama defensive lineman Jonathan Allen, for the final two games of the season, Coach Jay Gruden said Monday. Instead, the team will give the defensive lineman a few more months to recover from the foot surgery that derailed his rookie season in Week 6.

“I think by the time he gets back out to practice and gets in shape, I think the season will be over,” Gruden told reporters Monday, adding that he felt the 6-foot-3, 288-pound Allen was in good shape in general but noted that “football shape” was a different standard.

The plan instead is to point toward Allen’s return for offseason workouts next spring.

Allen, whom the Redskins chose with the 17th pick overall, suffered a Lisfranc injury in the Oct. 15 victory over San Francisco and underwent surgery soon after. Redskins officials said in late November they were hopeful he’d return to the lineup. But, as Gruden indicated Monday, it appears wiser to ensure he is fully recovered before returning to the game.

Allen becomes the team’s second consecutive first-round pick to have an injury-shortened rookie season.

Wide receiver Josh Doctson, whom the Redskins selected 22nd overall in the 2016 NFL draft, appeared in just two games and caught two balls before an Achilles’ ailment sidelined him the remainder of the season.

Asked how he’d grade Allen’s rookie campaign, Gruden said: “It seems like it was so long ago that he played, I can’t really remember. He was off to a good start, really. I think his strength at the point of attack was outstanding, his ability to play the run was good and then we used him in nickel situations also, which he was pushing the pocket extremely well. Sack production didn’t really tell the story about how productive he was. I think he played very well.”

In other injury news, Gruden said that cornerback Bashaud Breeland suffered an AC joint (shoulder) sprain in Sunday’s 20-15 victory over the Arizona Cardinals, and rookie Ryan Anderson, the team’s second-round pick in the 2017 draft, injured his patella tendon (knee). He described both players as “day-to-day.” Safety Montae Nicholson remains in the NFL concussion protocol.

Marshawn Lynch

Marshawn Lynch

OAKLAND, Calif. — Riding the legs of Marshawn Lynch, while holding on for dear life all day against a battered New York Giants team, the Oakland Raiders pulled out a 24-17 victory Sunday at the Oakland Coliseum. The win sets up a showdown for first place in the AFC West next week at Kansas City.

What it means: After a 2-4 start, the Raiders are at .500 for the first time since Week 4, when they were 2-2 and in the midst of a four-game losing streak from which they have been playing catchup ever since. There is now also a three-way tie for first place in the AFC West between the Raiders, Los Angeles Chargers and Kansas City Chiefs at 6-6. The three teams are 1-1 against each other thus far this season.

What I liked: The Raiders defense got off to an extremely fast start. They forced three straight three-and-outs to start the game and were in line for a fourth straight, save for Denico Autry jumping offside. At halftime, the Raiders had allowed only 100 yards of total offense to the Giants, on 30 plays, and limited them to just 2-of-7 on third-down conversions. Oakland also had two sacks of Geno Smith in the first half.

What I didn’t like: How cute the Raiders got offensively after Lynch ran wild through the Giants on the first series. True, it did look as though Lynch tweaked something on his 51-yard touchdown run, but he was not in the game for the next two offensive series. Instead, receiver Cordarrelle Patterson was running the ball on third-and-short. By the time Lynch returned, the Raiders’ offense was backfiring all over the field. Yeah, missing your top two receivers will have that effect.

Fantasy fallout: With Michael Crabtree serving a one-game suspension and Amari Cooper out with a concussion and left ankle injury, the Raiders’ WR corps was depleted. Then TE Jared Cook got nicked up on a tackle. Leave it to Lynch, then, who with 101 yards on the ground went over 100 yards for the first time since Oct. 22, 2015, when he had 122 yards for the Seattle Seahawks against the San Francisco 49ers. Lynch also caught two passes for 20 yards to go with his 51-yard TD run.

Mack attack: Khalil Mack put on a clinic with a pretty strip-sack of Smith in which he recovered his own forced fumble on a play that began at the Raiders’ 4-yard line late in the first half. It was sack No. 7.5 for Mack, who leads Oakland, as Mack simply swallowed up Smith and took the ball from him as the two fell to the grass.

What’s next: The Raiders, who have already defeated the Chiefs this season, play at Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday against Kansas City, which has lost six of its past seven games to fall to 6-6. The Raiders have not swept the Chiefs since 2012.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — This was a game in which a team could have lied down on its coach. The New York Jets were down two touchdowns to the Kansas City Chiefs before five minutes had even run off the clock. It would have been easy to quit on coach Todd Bowles.

Instead, the Jets roared back and fought for Bowles, beating the reeling and undisciplined Chiefs 38-31 in an unmemorable return for former Jet Darrelle Revis. While an ineffective Revis sat out the second half, the Jets finally got over their fourth-quarter woes to win just their second game in their last seven.

At 5-7 in the up-in-the-air AFC, the Jets play at Denver and New Orleans before hosting San Diego and finishing up in Foxborough. It may be a “Dumb and Dumber” chance, but the Jets still have a chance at the playoffs.

It is a credit to their coach, who is likely fighting for his job and watched his team score a season high in points in an effort to save it.

“I know how this thing goes,” said quarterback Josh McCown, who threw for 331 yards, threw a touchdown and rushed for two more. “If we weren’t doing that, you guys would be blaming him or somebody would be blaming him. It is hard not to give him the credit.”

While the other MetLife Stadium tenant, the Giants, appear as if they are about to dump their coach, Ben McAdoo, Bowles’ future is less clear. The Jets were supposed to be ripping a page out the Philadelphia 76ers’ “process” handbook, tanking for a top draft pick. Instead, they have fought, even as they remain a tad short on talent.

While Revis was mostly a nonfactor for the Chiefs in the first half and sat out the second half, the Jets’ corners had no answers for the Chiefs’ Tyreek Hill, who ran free all day.

On the Jets’ side, wideout Jermaine Kearse was a beast, going for nine catches and 157 yards. Routinely, Kearse, quarterback Josh McCown and the Jets converted on third downs.

Bowles has committed to McCown all year, not liking his younger choices. McCown again showed why he is a pro. While not a great player, he is serviceable. Revis and the Chiefs had no answers for him, and they lost their composure as corner Marcus Peters tossed a penalty flag into the seats. Peters’ form was not up to McCown’s.

McCown went 26-for-36 for 331 yards, throwing one touchdown and running for two others. His 1-yard sneak for a score just prior to the two-minute warning gave the Jets the lead. It gave their coach a little more breathing room — and even a chance at the playoffs.

“To come out of one of these finally, it is refreshing,” Bowles said.
